The Original Thirteen

The Children of Driftstone – the Original Thirteen

The Magic-Born, named Witches and Warlocks by those who came after, were created from the energy and magic of Driftstone. Born and shaped with purpose, each of the Thirteen was given a gift: the power to design, develop, and protect the land they call home.

Recognizing the balance required to keep such powerful forces in check, Driftstone created a partner for each Magic-Born—a kindred spirit to complement and temper their sibling. This balance of power was designed to ensure the Scales of Magic would never be tipped, and that creation and preservation would always walk hand in hand.

Until they didn’t…

Calder (Brother Ocean, the Tidewalker)

Calder (Brother Ocean, the Tidewalker)

Master of the Oceans and the Winds, Calder was an aid to travelers and critical in the evolution of trade and transportation. Seen as a friend to man, he was once revered as much as Faunwood, with consistent offerings made to him from sailors, anglers and fishing towns.

Prior to the war, he freely roamed the lands and was known for his volatile temper against those who abused the oceans. Despite his angry countenance, his alliance with his darker siblings, Goetfeather and Morvana, still shocked his followers. With his mastery over the water, he turned the literal tides for a greater part of the war and was directly responsible for the largest number of casualties.

Historians still do not understand his motivations for turning against Driftstone. Now banished to the Oceans in the Under, he can’t set foot on land.

Cyrus (Brother Architect)

Cyrus (Brother Architect)

Blessed with the innate ability to fold and expand space, Cyrus was often called an Architect. Considered eccentric, he was always experimenting and pushing the boundaries of the overlap of magic and science.

The inventor of sentient portals, he formed the world’s greatest library from his research and discoveries. The library vanished when he died in the war, and rumors of its existence in a pocket dimension persist today.

Discord (Brother Influence, Nicolai)

Discord (Brother Influence, Nicolai)

Discord was born under the moniker Influence, but his name changed when he caused division among his siblings. The youngest of the original siblings, he is the least known to historians outside of his role as the catalyst in the Witches’ War. He is the only member of the Magic-Born created without a partner, which has generated several theories around his intended purpose.

Edi (Edict, Sister Order)

Edi (Edict, Sister Order)

Eldest of the Thirteen by a few seconds, Edict is Pandora’s twin sister and plays a critical role in maintaining the ‘Scales of Balance’ as the Mistress of Order. Known for her intelligence and directness, she and her sister disappeared during the war. Historians believe the twins were killed in the Battle of the Valley of the Protector.

Farren (Brother Protector, The Protector)

Farren (Brother Protector, The Great Protector)

Farren was the eldest brother of the Original Thirteen, whose duties included protecting the land and its inhabitants. His bond and fascination with wildlife made him a powerful primary creator for many of Driftstone’s magical creatures. Caretaker of the land, a steward to Driftstone’s hearts and a voice for the beasts, Farren’s life and death were revered as sacred and noble, leading to a faith-based practice in his name.

Faunwood (Sister Earth, the Elven Witch)

Faunwood (Sister Earth, the Elven Witch)

Known to many as the Elven Witch, Faunwood is a secondary creator and mother to half of Driftstone’s magical races. Along with Farren, she is a steward to its seven hearts. Before the war, she was celebrated for her contributions to the earth and one of the more popular patroned of the Magic-Born in the Sacred Grove. After her brother Farren died in the Witches’ War, Faunwood retreated to the Living Forest. In partnership with the Chamber of Roots, she has separated herself and her children from the rest of Driftstone for ten thousand years.

Feyluna (Sister Soul, The Fairy Witch, Mother of Fae)

Feyluna (Sister Soul, The Witch Fairy, Mother of Fae)

Feyluna is a secondary creator, mother to the fae and steward of the Spirit Realm. Often considered the purest of the Original Thirteen, Feyluna is the only sibling able to harness spirit magic, a special form of light magic. Like her brother, Farren, she actively avoided the temples and patrons in the Sacred Grove, preferring her mission to be untainted or influenced by humans. Feyluna’s essence was split in two during the Witches’ War when she was forced to banish Calder from the land. Retreating to the Spirit Realm, she hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Goetfeather (Brother Wisdom, Alvis)

Goetfeather (Brother Wisdom, Alvis)

Gifted with mental prowess, Alvis was a glutton for knowledge, especially the forbidden kind. Instead of using his gifts to advance society, he hoarded his insights and collected them as weapons. It took little persuasion from Discord to goad him into hunting his darker pursuits, including necromancy, earning him the name Goetfeather. He is infamous for the unforgivable crime of killing a sacred creature, the Sagebeak, to absorb its knowledge and gain access to the Omniscora.

Morvana (Sister Fate, The Bog Witch)

Morvana (Sister Fate, The Bog Witch, The Dark Witch, Queen of Decay)

Once popular among humankind for her abilities to unravel fate, Morvana has transformed into the symbol of Dark Magic and the definition of an evil witch used to frighten children. Ten thousand years after the Witches’ War, Driftstone is still healing from the poison and rage she embedded into the land. Trapped in the Under, she has been no less idle or threatening; taking over the Dreamscape, she monitors the halls for opportunities to escape and strike revenge.

Nazeem (Brother Dream)

Nazeem (Brother Dream)

Nazeem is the only sibling to accomplish the creation of a realm, the Dreamscape, and the only Magic-Born to receive a transference of power from a sacred creature, the Ashendrake. After the Witches’ War, Nazeem was trapped in the Under, where he continues to battle Morvana in the Dreamscape and attempts to keep Calder and Goetfeather from reforming an alliance. The weight of these wars and the potency of magic required to sustain his defenses have accelerated his aging beyond that of his siblings. Fearing corruption or forced transference in his weakened state, he gave the Ashendrake back its form once he was banished from the Dreamscape. Without allies or aid, the future of Nazeem is uncertain.

Pan (Pandora, Sister Chaos)

Pan (Pandora, Sister Chaos)

Twin sister to Edi, Pan is considered the most powerful and unpredictable of the Original Thirteen. As a prime creator, she is responsible for dragons and humans, the bio-prints for all future life. Connected to the Divine Source of the Driftstone and wielding the innate magics of Chaos, she is the most fluid in her power and holds a special connection to all sentient life. Vulnerable to deep emotions, her sister Edi keeps her grounded and balanced.

Pan was accused of killing her brother Discord and initiating the Witches’ War. Like her sister, Edi, she is thought to have been a casualty of the war after the Battle of the Valley.

Sable (Lady Ironspire, Sister Innovation)

Sable (Lady Ironspire, Sister Innovation)

Sable, the most prominent and recognizable member of the Original Thirteen, not only survived the Witches’ War but has raised Driftstone’s largest army and most innovative city. A brilliant engineer and fearsome warrior, she is a polarizing figure who represents the Magic-Born’s haunted past and Driftstone’s future. When she won the war, at the cost of losing her brother and best friend, Cyrus, she felt abandoned by her surviving siblings, who’d retreated.

Sable is the only active and visible Magic-Born left, guarding the Over, which has left her anxious, conspiratorial, and paranoid. Many of Driftstone’s inhabitants no longer believe in the existence of the Original Thirteen, and they view Sable’s narrative of her past as a method to manipulate and control a divided populace.

Selene (Sister Body)

Selene (Sister Body)

Beautiful but vain, Selene ignored her innate gifts of regenerative and transformative magic to pursue youth and immortality. Despite forsaking her purpose, she’s the only member of the Original Thirteen to have accomplished communing and connecting with a sacred creature, the Unicorn, and forming a bond with it as her familiar.
